Alfie began his Morning Talk to the Senior School by highlighting the vital role that his friendship with teammate and best friend Owen played in his success during Race Across the World. He also spoke openly about his mental health struggles and how travel and connection with others have shaped his recovery and growth.

“Traveling isn’t just about seeing the world,” Alfie said, “it’s about discovering who you are and the role you want to play in the world.”

Top Gap Year Destinations:

• South East Asia: Perfect for first-time travellers due to its affordability and welcoming atmosphere. While flights may be expensive, the cost of living is low, and you’ll meet plenty of like-minded adventurers. Challenges include a poor train network and occasional language barriers.

• The Americas: Central and South America offer breathtaking landscapes, fewer crowds, and incredible hiking opportunities. Slightly more expensive but ideal for those seeking a less-touristed experience.

• Europe: Interrailing across Europe is fantastic for those anxious about venturing too far from home. Though pricier and populated more by holidaymakers than long-term travellers, it’s a safe and culturally rich option.

Travel Tips, Tricks, and Hacks:

• Travel safer: Ensure you have travel insurance, avoid ice in drinks outside Europe, and keep an eye on food hygiene standards. Be cautious while socialising and avoid hitchhiking alone.

• Travel lighter: Pack less—your back will thank you! Take advantage of laundrettes and focus on essentials.
