Performing Arts in the St Chris Sixth Form
At St Chris, we believe in fostering creativity, self-expression, and artistic excellence, and students participating in performing arts in the Sixth Form embody these values, with St Chris providing a platform for students to explore, create, and showcase their talents.
In the Sixth Form, our approach to performing arts is bespoke to each student. With small class sizes ranging from 4-8 individuals, students find themselves in an intimate and supportive environment that encourages them to take centre stage and feel supported, not only in performances but also in the development of their creative voice. This unique setting ensures that there are no places to hide, and every student can actively engage with their chosen art form.
Our students have the option to study Drama and Theatre at A Level which covers an in-depth study of the theatre in all its aspects. This involves a wide range of approaches, both theoretical and practical. Students study set okays from a performance and production perspective, perform devised and scripted pieces, learn about the ideas of key theatre practitioners, and see at least four live productions each year.
Thursday Options: Exploring the Boundaries of Creativity
For those that do not choose to study Drama and Theatre at A Level, the stage is always open. Whether it's drama, music, dance, or a combination of these, our dedicated faculty works closely with students in clubs and performances to refine their techniques, deepen their understanding of their craft, and unlock their full artistic potential.
One distinctive feature of our Sixth Form experience is Thursday Options, a mandatory extra-curricular period on Senior School and Sixth Form timetables. This dedicated time allows students to explore a new or existing interest, and for those passionate about the performing arts, it becomes a playground for creative experimentation.
In Options, Students have the freedom to collaborate on projects, experiment with different genres, and even organize performances for the school community. This hands-on approach not only hones their technical skills but also fosters teamwork, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the collaborative nature of the performing arts.
Wombles: An Opportunity Behind the Curtain
Those that don’t want to be in the spotlight are never excluded in performing arts, with other functions behind the scenes needed to fulfil each production. The Wombles, led by our in-house Theatre Technician, Mike Li, work to create dramatic lighting, pitch-perfect sound and ensure that dramatic productions run smoothly.
Students who are part of the Wombles particularly enjoy supporting their peers in the yearly musical production, usually held at the end of the calendar year. The group are comprised of Senior School and Sixth Form students who work with Mike in the box on lighting, or on stage in set design and moving props. The group is close-knit and inclusive and allows students to learn new technical skills beyond the stage.
Independent Projects and Artistic Exploration
The Sixth Form marks a phase of increasing independence, and this independence extends to the realm of performing arts. Students are encouraged to embark on independent projects, allowing them to delve into areas of personal interest, experiment with innovative concepts, and push the boundaries of artistic expression.
This emphasis on independent projects not only cultivates a sense of ownership over one's artistic journey but also prepares students for the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the creative industries. Whether it's writing an original play, composing a piece of music, or choreographing a dance routine, St Chris provides the space and support for students to explore their artistic visions.
Collaboration Across Disciplines
At St Chris, we believe that the boundaries between artistic disciplines are meant to be blurred. The performing arts offering in the Sixth Form actively encourages collaboration across disciplines, creating a rich and dynamic environment where students can draw inspiration from diverse sources.
Cross-disciplinary projects, such as combining drama with music or dance with visual arts, are not only welcomed but celebrated. This holistic approach fosters a well-rounded understanding of the arts, preparing students for the interconnected nature of the creative world beyond School.
Performance Opportunities: A Showcase of Talent
The culmination of the Sixth Form performing arts experience at St Chris is the opportunity to showcase talent to the wider school community. Whether it's through annual productions, recitals, or themed showcases, students have the chance to shine on stage and share their creative endeavours with their peers, teachers, and parents.
These performances celebrate individual achievements and highlight the collaborative spirit that defines the St Chris performing arts community. It's a chance for students to demonstrate the skills, passion, and dedication they've honed throughout their Sixth Form journey, leaving a lasting impact on the school's cultural legacy.
The performing arts offering in the St Chris Sixth Form nurtures creative visionaries from the second they join us. From individual growth to collaborative projects, leadership opportunities to independent exploration, St Chris provides a stage where students can not only discover their artistic prowess but also develop the skills and resilience needed to thrive in the ever-evolving world of the performing arts. For our students, creativity knows no bounds, and every student is encouraged to take a bow for their unique contribution to the world of performing arts at St Chris.
