Community Service
Sixth Form Community Service: A Commitment to the Wider Community
The world needs self-starters, self-motivators, self-innovators. It needs problem-solvers and conflict resolvers. It needs people who care about others and can look after themselves.
St Chris has always had a positive connection with the local and wider community since its establishment in 1915. To keep this legacy alive, all members of Year 12 (Lower Sixth) take part in the St Chris community service programme from January in Year 12. This involves a commitment of at least 10 hours where students undertake volunteer work at a variety of local charities and organisations.
Community Service and Holistic Education
Community service is just one cog in our holistic approach to education: believing that selflessly serving the wider community benefits both parties. Students completing community service can understand different perspectives, gain an insight to the charity, public or professional sectors and gain integrity in learning without reward.
Recent organisations that pupils have worked in include:
- Howard Cottage Social Centre
- North Herts Centre for Voluntary Service
- Herts Disability Sports Foundation
- Herts MS Therapy Centre
- Letchworth Settlement
- The White House Nursing Home
- Local charity shops (Scope, Age UK, British Heart Foundation, Garden House Hospice)
- Woolgrove School, Special Needs Academy
Students can also volunteer within St Chris in a variety of capacities including supporting Junior School children with their reading; setting up Science Hub sessions to help younger Senior School pupils with their homework; helping to run sports clubs including trampolining, netball, basketball, and swimming; supporting after school and lunchtime art, science, and cooking clubs; volunteering as a Junior School classroom assistant.
