Junior School Performing Arts
The St Chris Junior School community fosters creativity and self-expression within its students.
Skills in oracy and self-expression are fostered through a collaborative and encouraging environment that supports everyone to “have a go” and do their best, with plenty of opportunities to get involved.
All students deliver termly Morning Talks (Assemblies) with their class on the topic they are learning about, an experience which supports the development of confidence to speak in front of an audience from a young age.
Music in the Junior School
We believe music can provide fulfilment throughout life. It is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It transcends different cultures, abilities and generations. Listening to and making music fulfils an instinctive human need for self-expression and creativity. It necessitates key skills such as listening and turn-taking and stimulates responses on both emotional and intellectual levels. Besides being a creative and enjoyable activity, music can also be a highly academic and demanding subject. We provide many opportunities for children to engage with music and perform in different forums.
The very popular Junior School Musical Production, a real highlight of the year, is run as an After School Club, and performed in the main School Theatre with the full use of sound and lighting facilities and supported by Senior School students and staff.
There are also other opportunities for children to perform throughout the year to an audience for example busking at the Christmas Fayre; Black History Month Concert; Junior School Summer Celebration and other singing concerts and themed events.
Weekly activities run by music staff and specialist visiting teachers include: Gospel Choir, directed by Gemma Risden (a member of the much in demand Kingdom Choir); String Ensemble, directed by Katherine Mayes (violinist in the BBC Symphony Orchestra); 02 Young Voices Choir (Autumn term), and Orchestra. These clubs are open to all children.
Visiting Music Teachers
The children love learning instruments and huge numbers enjoy taking instrumental and singing lessons provided by our large team of outstanding visiting teachers. Orchestra is open to those who receive instrumental tuition.

Drama in the Junior School
In addition to class-based performances, students can take part in at least one large production each year. The children develop their theatre skills through performing in the School Theatre with professional-level lighting and sound. There are also opportunities for children to help backstage and in the costume department. Recent Junior School productions have included Little Mermaid, The Wiz and Calamity Janet.
Each year, the Junior School children have an opportunity to take part in a musical production, performed to the public, which is an excellent way of growing confidence as well as nurturing their dramatic and musical skills. Junior Show is open to all those who wish to participate from G Group to D Group and rehearsals take place after school and during lunchtimes.
As they rehearse, children develop their skills and awareness of theatrical performance and the terminology of stage craft. Some children show an interest in back-stage roles and are encouraged to work moving set and working with lighting and sound.
Popular shows are licenced and performed in the school theatre, making full use of the technology available. Previous Junior Show performances include The Little Mermaid, The Wiz, Annie and Calamity Jane.
Younger children take part in a collaborative nativity-based production, which rehearses as part of the school day.
Singing Morning Talks
Each week we gather together as a community and sing together. The singing morning talk is much enjoyed by staff and students and all students and staff join together to learn and sing a range of songs from contemporary pop, film music to traditional gospel music.
LAMDA
St Chris is also delighted to offer onsite LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) training. LAMDA is the largest Speech and Drama Board in the UK and has a reputation for excellence worldwide.
LAMDA training is for students interested in theatre – whether it be performing or behind the scenes – and helps grow their confidence and build their communication skills. The sessions take place each week in the School Theatre.
