Visual Arts in the Junior School
We're a School that fosters creativity, aiming to create an environment where young minds are encouraged to explore, express, and appreciate the beauty of artistic creation.
At the heart of this dedication is a belief in the transformative power of visual arts in shaping well-rounded individuals.
The School provides a nurturing space for budding artists with well-equipped art facilities designed to aid our students to be inspired. Students in the Junior School can engage in a diverse range of visual arts activities, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media projects. The emphasis is not only on developing technical skills but also on encouraging a genuine passion for artistic expression.
The School's visual arts curriculum is carefully crafted to introduce students to various art forms, artists, techniques, and styles. Through hands-on experiences and guided exploration, young artists are encouraged to discover their creative voices.
Those that visit our Junior School will notice our colourful corridors decorated with different manners of artwork across all year groups. From self-portraits to whole-class projects, we encourage students to feel confident in creating different styles of artwork. Each year, students in Year 4 engage in an end-of-year art exhibit where they display a portfolio of work inspired by different artists.
Art Clubs
Each term, there are number of lunchtime and after school clubs that support the visual arts that children can take part in. For our youngest children the clubs support fine motor skill development and creativity, and recent examples include painting, playdough, air dry clay and Hama bead clubs. As children progress through the Junior School, drawing, pottery, painting and collage clubs take place. Clubs change each term. Recently children have attended an art club two to three times a week to support them creating a piece of art for the Royal Academy Summer Schools’ exhibition.
Recycled Fashion Show: A fusion of art and sustainability
Our annual Inter-School Recycled Fashion Show at St Chris is a testament to our pupils’ creativity, innovation, and sustainability. Running for more than 28 years, the event presents a creative challenge to students – to design and create costumes entirely from recycled materials.
Students form design teams of one to four members and spend weeks designing and making costumes from an eclectic array of materials, turning everyday items into remarkable works of wearable art.
The creative process involves the use of diverse materials, ranging from newspapers and crisp packets to delivery packaging and live plants, showcasing not only artistic flair but also a dedication to sustainability.
These stunning creations take centre stage in a captivating catwalk show, where students model their costumes, each with its unique story and design. The event features students from schools across Hertfordshire and culminates in a panel of judges selecting winners.
Each year has a dedicated theme. 2020’s theme, "Truth to Power," inspired entrants to delve into pressing issues, from the climate crisis to the role of traditional media in society, and 2024’s theme “Lights, Camera, Action”, encouraged students to stretch their creations beyond the realms of societal constructs and even their own imaginations.
Following the show, all costumes are displayed in a dedicated sustainable fashion exhibition in Letchworth town centre. The exhibition invites the community to appreciate the intersection of art, innovation, and eco-consciousness.
