Last week saw the preparation for Apple Day in the Junior School. This saw the entire school involved in Apple Fest, collecting apples and organising the materials for the Junior School pupils.
The juicing process was lead by Junior School Forest Teacher, Lydia Somerville. Her brother-in-law had built an apple-mushing contraption which was brightly coloured in apple red and green paint. Pupils took it in turn placing the apples into the contraption, spinning the wheel to mush the apples, collecting the mush on the other side and juicing the mush into St Chris apple juice!
For those unfamiliar with Apple Day, this event takes place every year at St Chris and is one of our many traditions. Pupils count down to Apple Day in the Junior School and this year the whole school were encouraged to get involved. Of course, this meant that the taller pupils in the Senior School could reach the highest apples on the tree. Emma Bennett-Jones even had an ‘apple grabber’ net which allowed them to get the apples out of reach.
The effort, of course, was worth it. Junior School and Senior School pupils worked together to bottle the juice which was then sold to parents and families the following morning. The juice was sweet, light and refreshing and each bottle adorned a beautifully-designed label handmade by the Junior School classes.
The nominated charity for the apple juice proceeds went to the RSPCA and each bottle was sold for £3.
