Starting as a registered nurse, Denise initially pursued healthcare as she was passionate about making a difference, but the demands of shift work in hospitals led her to rethink her priorities.
"After my second child, I realized that I wanted to be present for my family," she explains. Denise spent a few years helping run a family business, later working in retail, all while keeping her core goal in mind: to balance work with family.
After four years in radiology at Pinehill Hospital, Denise was drawn to St Chris for its medical administration role, one that allowed her to blend her skills with a schedule that fit her life. Though new to the education sector, Denise embraced the role wholeheartedly, reflecting, "I wasn't sure what to expect, but the friendly atmosphere made it easy to feel at home. There’s a warmth here you don’t often find." Now, nearly a year in, Denise finds herself particularly connected to the students and staff. “The children make you laugh every day,” she says, noting how even routine interactions often turn into uplifting moments.
Denise highlights that while her role is deeply fulfilling, like every role, it has its challenges. Managing medications, keeping track of health protocols, and understanding each student’s unique needs require close attention. "You have to get it right, every time," she emphasizes. However, Denise noted that she appreciates the school’s culture in helping to overcome challenges, one where hierarchy takes a backseat and each individual’s voice matters: "It’s unlike anything I’ve experienced. Here, opinions are valued, and everyone’s treated with respect."
Outside of work, Denise treasures time with her two grandchildren, made possible by the flexibility her role provides. With a smile, she shares, "I get the holidays off, which means I can help with birthdays and plan little family outings. I finally feel like I have that balance I’ve always wanted."
As Denise puts it, "St Chris feels like a home.” Her journey is a testament to the values we hold dear—balancing work, family, and building connections.
