A story of brazen decisions, transformative experiences, with an enduring love for teaching, Liv Pastor’s journey takes us across borders through the picturesque towns and cities of Italy and into the heart of education at St Chris.
This is Liv Pastor's story.
Those that know Liv will remark that she brings an adventurous spirit and a deep passion for making a difference in the lives of her students; hence, this goes without saying. Joining St Chris back in September 2022, Liv works as a Teaching Assistant in the St Chris Junior School, dedicated to helping students unlock their potential and grow as independent learners.
From Ancient History to Global Adventures
Liv’s academic journey began at the University of Nottingham, where she pursued an undergraduate degree in Ancient History. Graduating amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, she recalls the anticlimactic and disconcerting experience of finishing university without the usual celebrations: “We didn’t get a graduation. Suddenly, in March, it was like, ‘Right, the university is closed.’ It was very strange, submitting everything from home.”
Determined to embrace life during lockdown, Liv made a bold and last-minute decision to become an au pair in Italy:
“I half-heartedly signed up to an au pair website, and the next thing I knew, I had loads of messages. Within two weeks, I told my parents I was moving to Italy. It was a whirlwind.”

Growth and Discovery in Italy
Living in Tuscany, Liv grew in confidence and independence, navigating the challenges of living with a new family and exploring a new culture. Her time in Italy wasn’t just about personal growth but also a chance to witness something rare:
“I saw Venice with no people in it during lockdown. Even the Venetians were amazed—it was so peaceful and surreal.”
She traveled extensively across northern Italy, visiting Florence, Pisa, Venice, Milan, to name but a few, all within a year-and-a-half. During her time there, Liv discovered her passion for education when helping to deliver a few lessons at a local school where her host mother worked. She mentioned how this experience ignited her interest in teaching and how this experience was key in defining her career path.
Liv is currently a Teaching Assistant in Iain's Year 6 (D Group) class.
Returning to Education
After a period of online tutoring and other roles, Liv found her way back to the UK, teaching at William Ransom Primary School in Hitchin and then moving to become a Teaching Assistant at St Chris. Today, she focuses on working one-to-one with one student, ensuring the curriculum is accessible and tailored to their needs: “I adapt resources, create checklists, and help students work independently. It’s about empowering them to stay on task while building their confidence.”
A Unique St Chris Experience
When asked what she loves most about St Chris, Liv is quick to praise the students:
“They’re so confident, but not arrogantly so. They’re incredibly self-aware and unafraid to be who they are. It’s inspiring to see them advocate for themselves.”
We resonated with this tremendously, discussing how those in their twenties are frequently trying to learn this same behaviour and advocate for what they deserve. Liv finds joy in helping students thrive while also learning the importance of balance: “I give so much emotionally and mentally to the kids, but I’m learning how to find that balance so I can be there for them long-term. It’s about teaching them independence while also taking care of myself.”
Looking Ahead
Liv’s journey—marked by resilience, adaptability, and a global outlook—was a brilliant one to listen to. Her adventurous spirit and dedication to her students make her an invaluable part of the school community.
We’re excited to see how Liv continues to inspire her students and colleagues alike!
