A Journey from Punjab to the UK.
This is Pam's story.
Pam Sunner’s journey to St Chris demonstrates the power of perseverance and self-belief. Born in Punjab, India, Pam initially worked as a teacher, specialising in maths for Senior School students and teaching in her first language, Punjabi. Over a decade, she not only taught but also organised school trips and parent meetings. “I loved teaching, but moving to the UK meant starting over,” she shares.
Starting Over in a New Country
Arriving in the UK 15 years ago, Pam faced the challenge of adapting to a new education system and overcoming language barriers. Determined to build a new career, she embraced roles that allowed her to learn and grow.
A Turning Point at Beadlow Manor Golf Club
One pivotal step in Pam’s career was her time at Beadlow Manor Golf Club. Starting in reception and membership, she quickly expanded her responsibilities, taking on finance and accounts tasks. “It started small—helping with membership and reception—but I was hungry to learn, so I took on more responsibilities,” she explains.
Her manager recognised her aptitude for numbers and encouraged her to pursue accounting. Pam began studying bookkeeping and accountancy while continuing to work full-time.
“Beadlow Manor was a turning point for me. It taught me so much and gave me the confidence to take on bigger challenges.”
Joining the St Chris Community
After Beadlow Manor was leased to new owners, Pam decided to seek new opportunities. She joined St Chris nearly two years ago and quickly felt at home. “St Chris is more than a workplace—it’s a community. The focus on staff and student wellbeing is unlike anything I’ve experienced,” she says.
Pam also highlights how the school has positively impacted her children, who are also students here.
“Seeing their personalities flourish here is amazing. It’s a nurturing environment that focuses on the whole child, not just academics.”
A Passion for Problem-Solving
One aspect of her role that Pam finds particularly rewarding is problem-solving. “I love finding new ways to streamline systems and processes, making things work better for everyone,” she shares. Her proactive attitude has helped improve financial systems and enhance communication across departments.
Education in India vs. the UK
Pam also reflects on the differences between the education systems in India and the UK. “In India, the system was strict and discipline-focused. Here, I see a more holistic approach, where children’s well-being is prioritised. It’s a refreshing change.”
Looking Ahead
Pam is excited to continue growing in her role and contributing to the St Chris community. “This school has given me so much, and I want to give back by using my skills to make it even better,” she says with a smile.
From overcoming language barriers to becoming a cornerstone of the St Chris finance team, Pam’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and the power of a supportive community, both at home and at work.
