A message from
Rich Jones, Head.
Except for visiting the dentist and eating tofu, I don’t tend to get too nervous about things these days. I think, as we progress through life, we create and develop a sort of thick scarred rhino hide through involvement and experience that builds resilience and our ability to handle and cope with situations, however difficult.
This, sadly, was not always the case.
I would get nervous before presentations, before matches, in examinations and certainly landing in slightly sketchy countries on my travels around Africa and the Middle East. For a period though, I had a grave fear: I didn’t like performing in my school drama studio. This fear came firmly from my first-ever drama lesson at school. I was a pretty cocksure chap who enjoyed drama so when I got to ‘big school’ I was excited about the prospect of acting. We were instructed to sit down on the black, shiny plastic floor and the teacher then asked for a couple of volunteers: I thrust my hand up quickly.
Sensing my eagerness, she beckoned me up in front of all my new classmates, including a lot of girls that I was just about to hugely impress. As I jumped up with confidence, I loudly, explosively and for, seemingly like an eternity, broke wind. Its rattle and bubble against the vinyl floor only made matters worse. I jumped back down like I was trying to smother a grenade and waited for the laughter to subside. Understandably, from that point of hijack onwards, I didn’t really have a drama lesson where I wasn’t wracked with nerves…
I saw a healthy dose of nerves around school this week; those tightly bound groups waiting to go into their V Group (Year 11) mock exams; a huddle of people waiting to audition for the upcoming Junior School production of Moana (including a really convincing chicken); a nervous singer readying himself before performing for some OAP VIP guests this afternoon at our Christmas Community Tea; and, of course, the start of the cross-country jitters for those in the Senior School.
Perfectly natural, perfectly normal.
I think we are sometimes nervous about nerves…and perhaps we don’t need to be.
Feeling nervous doesn’t mean you’re underprepared. It usually means you care about something beyond your control. As Adam Grant said “Anxiety is a caricature artist. It magnifies flaws and minimises strength.” However, a lot of studies have discovered that rather than always being considered a limitation, anxiety may actually help us feel more motivated and prepared when faced with challenges. Anxiety, of course, helps release dopamine, which supports that human impetus.
Anxiety isn't always a negative thing. A little bit of anxiety and nervousness can help prepare us to deal with threats, perform well and prompt us to keep working toward our goals. Too much anxiety, however, is not fine. As ever, it is all about balance.
I am rather mistrustful of people who project complete confidence. I am suspicious of those who wander in without a clumsy misplaced step, without a button or word out of sequence and those who glide effortlessly between erudite conversations and never spill anything down themselves. I watch them in awe initially and then it soon dawns on me that this is a game we all play – we are all masking to an extent. Confidence is important, true confidence, but just like anxiety and nerves it is fickle and nuanced. Gaining confidence is not about denying what could go wrong. It is about recognising what might go well…

Staff Spotlight.
Amy Anderson,
Head of English
“St Chris really aligns with my values—not just as a teacher, but as a person”.
This is Amy Anderson's story.
Amy's career began in Winchester, in particular at The University of Winchester where she studied her undergraduate degree. However, it wasn't all prose, poetry, and drama.
Through studying Drama and English Literature, Amy discovered her love for working with people through leading drama therapy sessions. Amy reflects on a pivotal moment during university - her involvement in a prison project, where she helped to deliver sessions and co-directed Oh, What a Lovely War with inmates. This unique experience, she says, taught her about resilience and the importance of empathy. “It made me look at prisons and people differently. People are people, and everyone makes mistakes,” Amy mentions.
Reverse Advent Calendar
This festive period, we kindly ask our families to participate in our Reverse Advent Calendar event. Below, you'll find the range of items accepted by Letchworth Food Bank. Your contributions will help those in need this Christmas to worry less about the essentials so that they may enjoy time spent with their loved ones. Donations will be taken to Letchworth Food Bank on Thursday 12 December and we welcome as many donations as possible from all members of our community by Wednesday 11 December.
Thank you in advance for your participation. We are sure this will make an enormous difference to local people.

Nursery & Junior
This week in the Junior School, the children have been busy learning, creating, and exploring! From planting apple trees in the Forest School orchard and crafting Christmas decorations, to building Mars Rover frames in the Senior School workshop, there's been no shortage of hands-on activities. Thoughtful discussions about kindness and teamwork have shaped classroom time, while the festive spirit has started to bloom with decorations and music.
Monte (Nursery) |
---|
This week, Monte (Nursery) planted a new apple tree, a Kings Acre Pippin, in the Forest School orchard to replace one lost during the summer heatwave two years ago. The children played energetic games like What's the Time, Mr Wolf? and Going on a Bear Hunt, and were thrilled to be visited by their little robin friend once again. Plans are underway to put up bird feeders soon, but with colder weather setting in, a reminder to send in gloves for next week! |
K Group (Reception) |
K Group (Reception) joined Monte in planting a new apple tree in the orchard, taking turns to ensure its roots were carefully covered. Inspired by Erica's creative use of ropes to make "snakes," the children eagerly joined in with their own imaginative ideas. The afternoon was packed with tree climbing, swing-building, and energetic races, making the most of their outdoor time. |
J Group (Year 1) |
Christmas preparations have begun in J Group (Year 1) with a creative twist! The children explored sewing machines, creating Christmas decorations for the Fayre. Their curiosity extended to D&T lessons, where they examined their own clothes to locate hems and discussed how garments are constructed. They’ve even learned why fabric is hemmed and sewn inside out! Sandra and the team are proud of J Group's enthusiasm and can't wait to share their festive creations next week. |
G Group (Year 3) |
Tuesday began with calm reflection in G Group (Year 3) during circle time. The children had meaningful discussions about friendships, inclusion, and kindness. They were also introduced to their new Worry Monster, a safe space for them to share their thoughts and feelings confidentially. Worry Monster is already proving a thoughtful addition to their classroom community. |
E Group (Year 5) |
Half of E Group (Year 5) ventured into the Senior School Workshop this week to work on their Mars Rover projects. Collaborating with Senior School students, they began constructing the frames for their rovers, showcasing excellent teamwork and engineering skills. |
D Group (Year 6) |
Iain's D Group (Year 6) kicked off the festive season by decorating their classroom tree and the Eco tree in the foyer. Using natural materials like oranges and pine cones, the children enjoyed making their own decorations to the tune of Christmas music. Later, they demonstrated exceptional teamwork during a LogoVisual Thinking activity, sharing their fascinating ideas on the long-term consequences of WWII. |
Eco Council: Switch Off Success! |
During Cut Your Carbon month, the Eco Councillors monitored the school’s energy usage over two consecutive Mondays. On the second Monday, everyone made an effort to switch off lights, computers, and other devices, while also closing doors to conserve heat. The result? A saving of 6 kWh of electricity! This significant achievement highlights the impact of small changes. The Eco Council is excited to introduce regular "Switch Off Mondays" in the new year to encourage even better energy-saving habits. |
Senior & Sixth Form
III and IV Group (Years 9 and 10) Basketball Success |
---|
Our III/IV Group (Years 9 and 10) basketball team played in the final game of the Year 10 league on Thursday night vs The Highfield School who won the district league last year. We put in a brilliant team performance winning 35-30 against a top opposition which included England basketball players. This win means we have finished the league unbeaten and now go to district finals with a chance to win the league. We are looking forward to some tune up games and additional coaching sessions in the new year! |
III Group (Year 9) Christmas Fun |
This week, III Group (Year 9) had an excellent time enjoying plenty of festive activities. From wreath-making with Emma Bennett-Jones (Mat Leave, Head of III Group) and Lizzy Anstice-Brown (Second in Art) to imposter-style games, there were plenty of festive challenges to get stuck into. There was also a lovely smell wafting from the Vege Centre - gingerbread biscuits! |
III Group (Year 9) Rugby Success |
A huge well done to the St Chris III Group (Year 9) rugby team who put in a huge team performance on Tuesday afternoon. We beat Thomas Alleyne's 100-5 in a great performance to maintain our unbeaten run this season. We look forward to our upcoming rugby fixtures next term. |
Archie's Karate Success |
Archie from III Group (Year 9) went to Sheffield for the GKR karate national championship to defend his title of National champion. He succeeded and got double gold! He has his shodan grading coming up in may which is first Dan black belt. |
Thursday Opportunities (Opps) Celebration |
This week, we closed the first Opp sessions of the year with a Special Opp celebration; students achieved pins inspired by their different disciplines. From Shrek to International Food Certificates, Car Mechanics, Care Home Companions and Friend of the Birds, we are sure students will be decorating their rooms and clothes with pin collections. The pins were lovingly designed by our Pin Committee in collaboration with Graphic Designer Tamara Locke. |
STUDENT INSIGHTS
Life in the Sixth Form
V Group (Year 11) student Penny Beaujeux has taken part in this term's Student Media Team Opp. Within these sessions, Penny has thought up, planned and delivered an outstanding literary piece which examines the Sixth Form and what to expect from a V Group (Year 11) perspective. Interviewing students and staff, her article provides valuable insight into life in the Sixth Form. All students within this Opp produced phenomenal work with a great level of professionalism and bucket-loads of fun! We invite members of our community to read Penny's work below.
