The Sixth Form: PSHE, Careers and Higher Education Programme, and Work Experience
PSHE
in Sixth Form Personal, Social, Health and Economics Education (PSHE) is delivered in weekly lessons, following a programme created with the PSHE Association.
Each year, we explore a range of topics under the three themes; Health & Wellbeing, Living in the Wider World and Relationships. These are taught in a spiral curriculum, building in an age-appropriate way, to cover the knowledge and skills needed by young people to make safe, well-informed choices.
Lessons encourage pupils to reflect on topical issues and develop social skills through discussion. Signposting to support is also a key element of PSHE so that young people know how to make healthy decisions and seek appropriate help with difficulties. Further information about PSHE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) can be found in our policies on the school website and through regular newsletters which update parents on what we have been learning about.
Careers and Higher Education Programme
St Chris provides comprehensive guidance and support to help students formulate their plans following Sixth Form through the PSHE curriculum. This includes study skills training and talks by visiting speakers, as well as visits to UCAS exhibitions. We are relaunching our Careers Programme in September 2024 and will be writing to students at the start of term with further information.
Each student also has a programme of one-to-one meetings with a dedicated Higher Education Adviser, who provides higher education application guidance and support from the summer term in Year 12.
We also use the Unifrog platform to encourage students to complete ‘super-curricular’ work, research and studying in their A level or potential university subjects to take them above and beyond the confines of the curriculum. They can research potential careers and begin their UCAS applications with the support of this helpful, user-friendly platform.
The Sixth Form team are here to assist and support you every step of the way – with apprenticeship and degree course information, mock interviews, CV support, references and general guidance for each individual.
Work Experience
Students are supported and encouraged to arrange work-shadowing or work experience placements during the summer holiday between the end of Year 12 (Lower Sixth) and the start of Year 13 (Upper Sixth).
